What goes wrong when prep is skipped
Installing new hardwood, tile or vinyl plank over an unlevel or moisture-damaged subfloor leads to premature buckling, persistent squeaks and cracked tile grout. No underlayment or premium plank can compensate for a deck that moves.
The prep checklist we follow
Professional subfloor preparation starts with joist and deck inspection, then flatness checks across the entire run, leveling compound in low spots, fastener re-screwing to kill deflection, and a moisture barrier where slab or crawlspace humidity is a factor.
On tile we add a decoupling or backer layer so seasonal movement in the framing never telegraphs into the grout lines.
Why it pays off
Two decades of construction experience says the same thing every time: the invisible day of prep is what makes the visible floor quiet, flat and beautiful a decade later. It is the least glamorous and most valuable line on a flooring estimate.
